  • High altitudes (4500m) and the hostile terrain.

Techint completed the Quebrada Blanca II Pipeline for Teck in Chile

In 2022, Techint Engineering & Construction successfully completed the Quebrada Blanca II Pipeline project for Teck in the high-altitude Andes region of Chile. This strategic project was designed to support copper mining operations in one of the most challenging and remote terrains in the world, enhancing mine infrastructure and operational efficiency. Techint choose for automatic welding on the Quebrada Blanca II pipeline project, delivering high-quality, efficient welding performance under extreme altitude and complex site conditions.

Quebrada Blanca II Pipeline

The Quebrada Blanca II Pipeline project included the installation of 164 km of 24-inch and 36-inch X70 steel pipelines with wall thicknesses ranging from 19 to 33 mm. The pipeline traversed high-altitude and extremely hostile terrain, requiring advanced engineering and precision construction techniques. Key aspects of the project included:

  • Filling and capping using Advanced Pulse Gas Metal Arc Welding (P-GMAW)
  • Deployment of the PWT XCS Welding System for automated, high-quality, and efficient pipeline welding
  • High-altitude operations at elevations up to 4,500 meters, the project faced steep terrain, extreme weather, and pandemic-related restrictions. Challenging the logistics and environmental planning.
  • Strict adherence to safety and quality standards in remote and challenging environments
  • Handling high wall thickness sections for durability and long-term operational reliability

Techint’s use of the PWT XCS Welding System enabled automated, high-precision welding across the Quebrada Blanca II Pipeline, ensuring consistent weld quality and maximum productivity despite the demanding terrain and high-altitude conditions.

The Quebrada Blanca II Pipeline project was operational at the end of October 2023. This project strengthens the operational capacity of Teck’s mining operations while showcasing the importance of advanced welding technologies in high-altitude and challenging terrains. It further demonstrates Chile’s capability to deliver world-class mining infrastructure.
