Oilserv and NNPC – AKK Gas Pipeline Project in Nigeria
In 2020, Oilserv, an indigenous Nigerian EPC company, was awarded the contract by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to construct a 303 km section of the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline. This strategic project, part of Nigeria’s Gas Master Plan, is designed to establish a nationwide gas transmission backbone, reduce gas flaring, and support industrialization across northern Nigeria.

AKK Gas Pipeline Project Details
The AKK Gas Pipeline is one of the most ambitious energy infrastructure projects in West Africa. Oilserv is constructing 303 km of pipeline, extending from Ajaokuta in Kogi State to the Kaduna State–Niger State border. This section is part of the 614 km mega-project that will ultimately connect Ajaokuta to Kano through Abuja and Kaduna.
- 303 km of X70 high-strength steel pipeline (40–42” diameter, 17–24 mm wall thickness)
- Integration of gas stations, pigging stations, block valve stations, and terminal facilities
- Successful River Niger crossing (2 km wide) using horizontal directional drilling (HDD), a rare global engineering feat
- Additional HDD crossing of the Pi River completed with minimal environmental impact
- Deployment of the PWT XCS automatic welding system, ensuring consistent, high-quality welds with maximum efficiency
- Overcoming complex terrain challenges, including solid rock trenching up to 4 meters deep
- Project scheduled for mechanical completion by end of 2025
The AKK Gas Pipeline will significantly boost Nigeria’s gas supply capacity, providing cleaner fuel for power generation, industry, and households. Beyond the engineering, the project strengthens Nigeria’s ability to harness its abundant natural gas resources, reduces environmental impact by curbing flaring, and establishes the backbone for future gas distribution networks. Oilserv’s successful delivery of this project highlights Nigeria’s growing capacity to execute complex, world-class energy infrastructure.
