Techint built the Los Bronces IV Pipeline for Anglo American in Chile

In 2021, Techint Engineering & Construction started the Los Bronces IV Pipeline project for Anglo American, a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing the copper and molybdenum mining operations in the Andean region of Chile. The project involved the replacement of 31 km of pipelines, including systems for pulp, recovered water, and tailings, to increase their operational lifespan in challenging high-altitude conditions.

Los Bronces IV Pipeline

The Los Bronces IV Pipeline project encompassed the installation of approximately 68 km of 24-inch diameter pipelines with wall thicknesses ranging from 14 to 33 mm. The project featured:

• High-altitude operations operating at elevations up to 4,500 meters resulted in reduced oxygen levels, requiring careful planning and adaptation from the team.
• Logistical & environmental challenges the project faced steep terrain, extreme weather such as snowfalls or high winds, and pandemic-related restrictions.
• Advanced welding techniques, including automatic root-pass welding without copper backing and filling/capping using Advanced Pulsed Gas Metal Arc Welding (P-GMAW), ensuring high-quality and efficient welds in demanding conditions.
• Utilization of the PWT XCS Welding System for automated pipeline welding solutions, enhancing productivity and precision in the welding process.
• Implementation of stringent safety and quality control measures to adhere to the project's rigorous standards and ensure the safety of personnel and the environment.
