DS-1 built the IGB Gas Pipeline in Bulgaria

In 2022, DS-1, together with ICGB, successfully completed the Gas Interconnector Greece–Bulgaria (IGB). This strategic European energy project was developed to diversify natural gas supply, strengthen Bulgaria’s energy security, and enhance regional integration across Southeast Europe.

IGB Gas Pipeline

The IGB Pipeline is a 120-kilometer natural gas interconnector linking Komotini, Greece to Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. Built with X65 steel, 32-inch diameter pipes and 11 mm wall thickness, the project represents one of the most important steps in diversifying gas supply for Bulgaria and the wider region. The construction and associated systems featured:

  • Pipeline length of 120 km through Bulgaria
  • X65 steel pipeline with 32” diameter and 11 mm wall thickness
  • Automated welding technology ensuring high-integrity welds
  • On the best production day; 55 joints in a single shift were completed.
  • Interconnection to the Southern Gas Corridor and LNG terminals

DS-1 deployed the PWT XCS Welding System on the IGB pipeline project, achieving automated, high-integrity welding solutions tailored for large-diameter gas transmission pipelines. The advanced system ensured both speed and precision, delivering industry-leading performance on one of Europe’s most strategic infrastructure projects.

This advanced gas pipeline in Bulgaria enables the secure transport of natural gas from Azerbaijan and global LNG markets into Bulgaria and further into Europe. By combining DS-1’s expertise with PWT’s automated welding technology, the IGB project strengthens European energy security, improves regional resilience, creates jobs, and demonstrates Bulgaria’s capacity to deliver world-class energy infrastructure.
